Wie schon in The Killing setzt sich Kubrick auch in Full Metal Jacket mit den Absurditäten des Krieges auseinander. Aber während der Krieg in The Killing eher eine Nebenrolle gespielt hat und es mehr um die Intrigen und die einzelnen Figuren ging, stellt er ihn in Full Metal Jacket mit seiner vollen Wucht und Brutalität dar. Als Basis für sein Drehbuch wählte er die Veröffentlichungen von zwei Kriegsberichterstattern, von denen einer auch maßgeblich am Drehbuch beteiligt war. Da der Darsteller des Ausbilders, R. Lee. Ermey, in seinem wirklichen Leben tatsächlich Ausbilder bei den Marines war, ist die im Film dargestellte Handlung als ziemlich realistisch zu betrachten.
